The Blue Jackets acquired Tomi Kallio (RW) and Pauli Levokari (D) from the Atlanta Thrashers for Chris Nielsen (RW) and Petteri Nummelin (D) on Dec. 2, 2002.

Kevin Dineen (RW) announced his retirement on Nov. 5, 2002. Dineen, who turned 39 last month, played 20 seasons in the NHL and accounted for 355 goals, 405 assists, and 2,229 penalty minutes in 1,188 games. "I feel extremely lucky to have been able to play in the National Hockey League as long as I have and to have been able to play with and for so many quality people,"

Free agent Acquisitions

On Oct. 5, 2002 the Columbus Blue Jackets claimed Hannes Hyvonen (RW) off waivers from the Florida Panthers.

On August 15, 2002 the Columbus Blue Jackets signed free agent Andrew Cassels (C), who previously played with the Vancouver Canucks.

On July 4, 2002 the Columbus Blue Jackets signed Scott Lachance (D), who previously played with the Vancouver Canucks, and Luke Richardson (D), who previously played with the Philadelphia Flyers, to multi-year contracts.

The Columbus Blue Jackets acquired the top overall pick in the 2002 draft from the Florida Panthers for the third overall pick and the right to switch 2003 first-round picks on June 23, 2002. The same day the Blue Jackets acquired the 20th overall pick in the 2002 draft and the rights to Mike Pandolfo (LW) from the Buffalo Sabres for the 30th overall pick.
