Mike Danton (C) was suspended by the Devils on Dec. 3, 2002 for failing to report to the minors on Nov. 29, 2002. Danton, who changed his name from Mike Jefferson in the offseason, had been complaining about his lack of playing time.

Tommy Albelin (D) was called up from Albany of the AHL by the New Jersey Devils on Oct. 23, 2002..

Off Season Acquisitions

On July 13, 2002 the Devils signed free agent  Raymond Giroux (D), who had been with the New York Islanders; signed free agent  Mike Matteucci (D), who had been with the Minnesota Wild; signed free agent  Craig Darby (C), who had been with the Montreal Canadiens; signed  Alex Brooks (D), Anton Kadeykin (D) and Krisjanis Redlihs (D),  Chris Hartsburg (F) and  Matus Kostur (G).

On July 9, 2002, the Devils signed  Corey Schwab (G), who had been with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Trades

On March 20, 2002 the Devils acquired  Joe Nieuwendyk (C) and  Jamie Langenbrunner (RW) from the Dallas Stars for  Jason Arnott (C) and  Randy McKay (RW); The Devils also acquired Stephane Richer (RW) from the Pittsburgh Penguins for a conditional 2002 draft pick.
