Newsworthy The Redskins playoff hopes were derailed temporarily after a 27-20 defeat to the Dallas Cowboys on Nov. 28, 2002. Coach Stever Spurrier was slightly embarrassed as he promised the game ball from the Dallas game to the Redskins owner when he accepted the position in January. The Redskins will be looking for blood when they battle the New York Giants on Dec. 8, 2002. Craig Jarrett (P) was signed to the practice squad on Nov. 21, 2002. Sam Shade (S) was placed on the injured reserve list with a neck injury on Nov. 19, 2002. Jacquez Green (WR/KR) was released by the Redskins on Nov. 13, 2002. With an extra spot on the active roster the Redskins signed Justin Skaggs (WR). The Redskins are hoping to sign Jon Jansen (OL) to a six-year $24 million dollar contract extension before the end of the season. Jansen might test free agency where he could become the highest paid right tackle in the NFL. The Insider LowDown: NFL Tickets Center Outlook: Looking impressive in their 31-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, Steve Spurrier and the Washington Redskins look to put past frustrations aside and make a run at the Super Bowl. Steve Spurrier has a long history of winning with mediocre teams in College (He even won at Duke University). Surprisingly, rarely does one of his college standouts make it in the NFL. The Philadelphia Eagles (Sept. 16 - Monday Night Football) will be the first serious challenge to the new Spurrier regime/offense. The Eagles have an outstanding defensive presence and will be looking for blood after a close loss (27-24) to the Tennessee Titans in the season opener. If Shane Matthews can stay healthy he can prove to be one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the NFL. When I saw him with the Chicago Bears he had some great games, until he got hurt and was replaced. If Shane Matthews and Stephen Davis can stay healthy the Redskins have a solid chance of making the playoffs and creating some noise in the NFC East. |
